With an area of 90 square kilometers, Kish Island lies 18 kilometers off the southern
coasts of Iran in the Persian Gulf. The Island is 300 kilometers
away from Bandar Abbas port city of Iran and 250 kilometers from Dubai.
Dubbed the Persian Gulfs mother - of - pearl, Kish has a pleasant and moderate temperature
in almost seven months of the year. Thanks to its strategic geographical location, Kish
has long been a major center of trade and goods transit in the Persian Gulf. Kish was
the first free trade zone of Iran.
Development
of Infrastructure Facilities
Construction of 275 Km of roads, streets and special cycling track, compared to the
past record of only 25 Km. Construction of a cellular telephone center offering an
overall 5,000 lines to applicants.
Construction of a marine passenger terminal, built on an area of some 5,000 square
meters. The area of the air terminals of the Island was increased to 7,800 square
meters from the previous 1500 square meters. Production of electricity was doubled and drinking water facilities provided to all the inhabitants of the Island. Some 65,000 cubic meters of sewage was treated at the sewage treatment
centers constructed in 1996, thereby facilitating development of the
vegetated areas in Kish. Tourism and tourist conducts have been highlighted in Kish and therefore the natural landscape of
the Island has to be preserved and developed. To this end, the area of man-made
forests was increased to 2,000 hectares in 1996 compared to a mere 200 hectares in 1993. Also trees were planted along 200 Km of roads and streets.
Development of Accommodations and Lodging Facilities
The number of tourists who chose to spend their holidays in Kish is on the increase
everyday. The figure showed a growth of 114 % in 1996, compared to that of 1993.
The number of hotel beds during the same period of time has been doubled. Modern

Privileges in Kish
Chief
among the privileges of investment in the Kish Free Zone are:
1. There is no limitation on industrial investment or the
amount of shares held by foreign parties.
2. The investors shall enjoy tax holiday for 15 years.
3. The law fully guarantees the legal rights of foreign
entrepreneurs.
4. Foreign investors are allowed to hire lands at reasonable
rentals or become owner of high-rise buildings or
installations.
5. All the industrial commodities imported to the Island shall
be exempt from customs and commercial duties.
6. Imports of machinery, raw materials, equipment, vehicle and
industrial parts, except cars and yachts, are exempt from port
and airport duties.
7. In order to export goods to the mainland, the producers
operating in Kish should only pay the customs duties of the
imported materials proportionate to the added value
of their merchandise.
8. The Kish Free Zone issues certificate of origin for any
cargo bound out of the
Island.
9. All the goods and raw materials freighted to Kish follow inland haulage rules.
10. Foreign nationals need not get a previous visa to directly enter Kish.
11. The banking facilities are more flexible.
12. Foreign exchange conversions to and from Iranian rial are easily conducted at the
free rate.
13. There is no constraint on the transfer of the Iranian rial or other currencies
out of the zone.
14. Workshop rules are to be determined between the employer and the employee.
15. The labour laws governing the zone are in accordance with
recommendations of the
International Labour Organization (ILO). The laws, specifically effective for the Zone,
have been designed to regulate relations between the employer and the employee.
16. Kish is a bridge connecting the newly emerging Central Asian states with the
Persian Gulf littoral countries. The Island is actually a strategic bridge
between Europe and Asia.
17. The belonging of Kish to a 60-million mainland, which is itself one of the largest
markets of the region, has highly promoted the Islands status as a major tourist
destination, attracting over a million holiday makers and tourists each year.
