QESHM AT A GLANCE
SITUATION:
The island of Qeshm is
situated at the entrance of the Persian Gulf in the
Strait of Hormoz, in the 55 to 57 degrees longitude
and 25 to 27 degrees latitude.
SIZE:
It is 1500 km2 in area
with 136 km as length and 11 km as average width. The
island is 30 km long at its maximum width.
GEOLOGY:
From a geological point of view, the island of Qeshm is on the wrinkled region
containing the Zagross mountain range most of whose hills and heights are of the
calcareous type with sharp cuts.
NATURE:
The island contains plain and coastal lands with low lying mountains spread over the
whole surface. The island's southern coasts are of the coral type.
HEIGHT:
The island's highest point, on a salt field to its west, is 397 meters from sea level.
Its averag height, on the other hand, is 10 meters.
CLIMATE:
Warm, semi equatorial, and humid summers with scattered winds. The winters, on the other hand, are pleasant and spring like. The island's average humidity is 74% .
RAINFALL:
A maximum of 456 mm, and a minimum of 41 mm, annually, and the rainy season most often
begins in October and ends in late March.
TEMPERATURE:
The annual median of the daily average temperature is 27 degrees centigrade. On the
other hand, the annual average of the maximum daily temperature is 32 degrees
centigrade.
WATER TEMPERATURE:
It stands at 20 to 22 degrees centigrade in late January while it is around 32 degrees
centigrade.
WAVES:
The waves have a low height in the northern coasts and rarely do they exceed one meter in height.
TIDES:
The sea's maximum rising tide often stands at 4.1 meters while the maximum of the
falling tide usually stands at 0.3 meters.
WIND:
Most winds originate from the island's south and southwestern parts. The winds blowing
from the north and the northeast are of secondary importance. The average velocity of
the winds in autumn ranges from 3.5 to 5 meters per second while in winter it ranges
from 5.5 to 8 meters per second.
FLORA:
There are some 200 hectares of Mangrove sea forest in the waters between Laft and
Bandar Pol region. The island is also blessed with the possession of an assortment of
plants and trees native to tropical regions along with palm groves. There are fruit
trees grown in island's northern villages.
UNDERGROUND RESOURCES:
Natural gas and oil.
FISHING:
Some 20,000 tons of fish, shrimp and other aquatic animals are hunted annually.
FARM ANIMALS:
Cows, camels, goats, sheep and chickens are raised using traditional methods.
POPULATION:
Some 75,000 people.
AGRICULTURE:
Some 2.5% of the island's surface is under the cultivation of grain, vegetables and
fruit trees.
NATURAL ATTRACTIONS:
The island contains plenty of natural attractions among which the scenic view of the
sea, the sunrise and sunset, the beautiful southern coasts, the Hara sea forest, the
temples fig tree, the mountains, caves, the salt hills and the river basins are just
some.
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS:
Majestic mosques, ancient forts, ventilation shafts, historic architecture of the
cities as well as the tree nurseries.
SHOPPING CENTERS:
Traditional and modern markets in Qeshm and Dargahan.
TOURIST FACILITIES:
An international hotel, a range of affordable hotels and restaurants along with the 22 Bahman guest house.
WILDLIFE:
Some 200 species of birds migrating or residing in natural Hara forest habitats with
tropical climate, eagle, fox, various sea turtles coming to the island's sandy shores
to lay eggs...
RECREATION:
An equestrian and coastal coach riding club, a special coastal bicycle lane, children
amusement center, aquatic sports, boat riding along Hara sea forest and sightseeing of
the island's attractive and virgin nature.
WELFARE FACILITIES:
Connected to the country's power grid, a desalinization system, a number of dams, some
400 km of paved road, universities, a hospital, an infirmary, a communication center,
an international airport, jetties equipped with modern facilities and sports arenas.
